Driving a 13 yr old pegeot 106 1.1 500 miles in winter?
Okay i have a 97 pug 1.1 and me and mate are going to edinburgh for new years. However we live on the south coast so its a 500 mile trip. although another person has a new better car he will only have 1 months driving experience against my year so we decided i should drive.
only i have a few hesitations, the car has done 117000 and although seemingly working perfectly now, has had its problems, and it has very skinny budget tires. (no abs either)
firstly im nervous the journey isnt too long for the car and secondly im nervous about the road conditions in edinburgh or up north that time of year,
any advice would be greatly appreciated ( helpful stuff please, we have looked at flights. trains and buses and all are far too expensive although preferable) thankyou
If you are unsure about your car, use the other driver's car. Either way, Check the car thoroughly a couple of weeks before you go. Invest in breakdown cover, Increase the tyre pressures by a couple of psi all round - 1000 + mile round trip. Plan your route, Depending on where you live - Brighton area, A23, M23, M25 to Dartford, M11 to Cambridge then A14 & A1(M) all the way to Edinburgh. Southampton area, M27, M3, A34, M40, M42 (S.W) , M5 (N) , M6 to Carlisle, A74 then A7 to Edinburgh. Stick to main roads, Avoid 'rush hour', share the driving (make sure the other drivers are covered by insurance) - aim for about 2 hours - 100 miles -max before swapping over or taking a break. Listen to one of the 'National' radio stations for regular traffic reports, Avoid too many carbohydrates ( can cause tiredness ) Carry at least 10 litres of fresh water, a bottle of screen wash additive (£1.50 for 2.5 litres at ASDA) , top-up oil, full petrol can, decent road atlas or sat-nav, a couple of duvets - 15 tog - just in case! Avoid filling up at motorway service stations ( too expensive) search on line for supermarkets selling fuel near motorway junctions! good for refuelling yourself as well! Regarding the A.B.S, that is no great problem as all that does is gives you the ability to steer the car whilst braking heavily, & is not the great safety device drivers think it is. Drive according to the conditions & your ability. Above all have a great Hogmanay in 'Auld Reekie' as it used to be known!!
