What else do I need for video editing system? (PRO gears only)?
If an audio recording needs a powerful workstation, a pro recording software, pro audio interface, pro mic preamp, pro mics and other instruments, what else do I need for professional video editing assuming I already have a powerful workstation, a pro video editing software and a professional camcorder? Do I need a powerful video card specifically for video editing or is there such thing as video interface or do I need both?
You did not tell us the source of the video. High definition needs more resources (CPU cycles, RAM, available hard drive space, etc) than standard definition video. And video, in general uses WAY more resources than audio (keep in mind that video is moving images AND audio).
For example, 60 minutes of uncompressed audio can use a few hundred megabytes of hard disc space on the computer. 60 minutes of uncompressed high definition video uses closer to 44 gigabytes of computer hard drive space. If you have worked with audio, you already know that step 1 for audio manipulation is decompressing the audio... same with video.
The video card is the least of the computing platform issues...
Most "pro grade" camcorders record to DV, HDV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO HD, SDCAM, HDCAM and XDCAM formats. Typically, the method to get this video imported to a computer is by connecting the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB). So that "video interface" in this case is firewire.
There are some video cards that can connect to some camcorders with HDMI or component (RGB) cnnections.
Final Cut (Macintosh) and Adobe products (cross platform) and Sony Vegas (Windows) are the usual suspects. There are others - like AVID...
"Professional camcorder" - in my opinion - has:
Lenses that are 72mm diameter or larger.
3-chip (preferably CCD) imaging chip array that is 1/3" or larger.
XLR connectors for audio inputs.
Typically, when you meet these three criteria, the other items - manual zoom ring, manual focus ring, manual audio gain control, manual aperture/iris control - among other capabilities - all on the OUTSIDE of the camcorder and not buried in a menu, will be available.
Panasonic AG-HVX200
Canon XHA1; XLH series
JVC GY-HM100
Sony HVR Z5, HVR-Z7, any from the XDCAM or HDCAM series, and from the NXCAM series.
Generally speakin, no AVCHD. That is more typical of consumer-grade camcorders.
