White noise/hissing constant when recording?
ok whenever i record my vocals for a track there is this CONSTANT hissing whitenoise in the background throughout the whole track that is very noticeable and ruins the vocals. Nady smps-usb phantom power that i plug my NEW xlr cables in and from there the USB into my computer my microphone is a 1 large-diaphragm cardioid studio condenser mic (GXL2200); All new equipment. i have a gateway computer with windows XP and i record on cool edit pro 2.1 i know you can use audacity to get rid of the hissing but it distorts the vocals. I really need help finding a way to prevent the noise from even happening.
There are a couple of things that it could be.
Condenser mics can be incredibly sensitive, which is what makes them good for things like the human voice (I've got one mic that I can stand 3 feet from it, rub my fingers together, and hear it in my headphones).
My first thought is that it's picking up some stray noise. The good news is that since the mic is a cardioid, you may be able to position the mic to see if it's picking up background noise. Try turning the microphone 90 degrees, and see if the sound changes. If it does, it's picking up a sound source like the fan on your computer, so you'd need to figure out some way of making it quieter.
If it doesn't change, then it may be something in the signal path that's causing the problem. Make sure the cord isn't running anyplace it could be picking up a stray signal (the cable is supposed to be shielded to prevent that, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.)
Also, see if there is a way in your software to boost the microphone gain. Sometimes with USB inputs, the level is a little low, and you end up having to boost the playback volume, and what you also end up doing is boosting any noise in the system.
