What are some great jazz artists for beginners?
I love Miles Davis and Charles Mingus but I don't know of any others. Somebody help please!
You don't NEED to know any artists, but if you want to know Jazz music, you'll need more than an understanding of Coltrane, Miles, and Monk. I'll sort by instrument, but this is an incomplete list, there are many more. Giving a big list will be daunting and it'll be difficult to know where to start, but here we go.
Piano:
Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Tommy Flanagan, Elmo Hope, Kenny Drew, Red Garland
Bass: Charles Mingus, Ron Carter, Doug Watkins, Paul Chambers, Dave Holland, Jaco Pastorius, Jim Garrison, Percy Heath, Eugene Wright
Drums: Chick Webb, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Higgins, Art Taylor, Joe Morello, Louie Bellson, Lenny White, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach
Guitar: Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, Pet Metheny, Stanley Jordan
Tenor Sax: John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Simms, Michael Brecker, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Stan Getz
Alto Saxophone: Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Dave Sanborn, Ornette Coleman, Paul Desmond, Eric Dolphy
Trumpet/Cornet/Flugelhorn: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Nat Adderley, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong, Fats Navarro, Bix Biederbecke, Wynton Marsalis, Booker Little, Lee Morgan, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd
Vibraphone: Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Ayers, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton
Percussion: Airto Moreira, Willie Bobo, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, James Mtume
These are just a few on the more popular Jazz instruments. I don't know if that'll really help you get into Jazz. I'd suggest listening to a couple of the best Jazz records made. I always recommend, "Kind of Blue." If you haven't listened to it already, make that your next purchase. I'd also highly recommend Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." There's a lot of Jazz out there, the best way to get into it, is to just dive in and listen.
Happy listening,
AE
