In a previous question you said that you could not understand the manual when it was talking about f-stops.
This is a problem because your issue is exposure. You are trying to take pictures of moving objects in the dark. You need to understand what the relationship is between f stop (the size of the hole that light goes through before it hits the sensor) shutter speed (how long the sensor is exposed to light) and ISO the sensitivity of your sensor.
The smaller the f stop, the larger the hole, the more light gets through. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the sensor is, but, the more noise becomes an issue. Shutter speed speaks for itself.
If you set your camera to aperture mode and the aperture to the smallest number possible, set the ISO to the second highest setting (on D40s, the highest ISO is not great) and let the camera determine the shutter speed.
Use the spot metering option. Spot metering tells your camera to determine the exposure based on a very small part of what you see through the lens. You really need to understand what the different metering options are (read the manual).
You are asking about a tough situation to take photos in, if you take the time to understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together to create your exposure, how to use the aperture mode and change he camera's aperture and how to set your ISO and what the consequences of a higher ISO is, you have a fighting chance to take a good photo.
If you don't, your going to get the same results.
Best of luck.
