How do I power Paradigm Atom speakers?
I have Paradigm Atom speakers I want to use for my computer. I don't see the need for a receiver since I won't be using Dolby Digital 5.1 or anything like that. Just stereo. Do I still need a receiver? Is it possible to just use some sort of amplifier? Are they cheaper? In other words, how can I get these speakers to work with the Sound Card in my computer? Obviously just can't plug them in since it is a different wiring.
Amplifiers are usually higher-end and therefore more expensive. Just use a stereo receiver with the Atoms. If you don't have an old one hanging around the house you can always find them on Ebay. If you want to by a new, economical one, Circuit City has a Sherwood Model that is hard to beat for $79.99. I would just be sure the receiver you get has a subwoofer output since you will probably eventually want to use a sub with the Atoms. You will hook up the receiver to the computer with a mini plug to dual RCA plug cable.
I use an old pair of Baby Advent II's with an old Yamaha receiver on my computer. Both yard sale finds. Total cost $25.00. Works great.
