Did Disco ruin the soul and funk scene?
I hated how disco was overcommercialized and I hated the fashion of that era.I loved soul and funk especially of the early 1970's.A woman said that disco evolved from funk because funk was too sosphisticated for white audiences to dance too.Funk had more meaning and told a story than disco which sounded horrible and I dont understand why would they make that stupid movie "Saturday night fever" and commercialize it cause rock fans hated it but that demolish nightwas uncalled for though and I hate Hip Hop black young adults used to talk mature!
Actually, I always liked disco (and I'm only 29). Call it a guilty indulgence or whatever, but I thought it was a natural progression from Funk. Funk has a more elastic beat; disco has a harder 4-on-the-floor beat. Big fan of the hi-hat on the off-beat in disco too. Granted, the production in disco is ridiculously overblown and the lyrics are generally stupid...but I do like the sound. And funk wasn't immune to those bad tendencies either, Ohio Players are one example.
You know, you're just never gonna get another Sam Cooke or Marvin Gaye or Funkadelic or James Brown. Those styles have already been done as well as possible. No one's ever gonna put out something as incredible as "What's Goin On" again. So I don't really think disco killed soul and funk...more like it was just the next step after soul and funk had been mastered.
