What is the difference between an electret mic and a dynamic mic?
I would like to know the exterior differences of an electret mic and a dynamic mic, Photos are welcome, but i want pictures of the actual unit, not the microphone housing, so I don't want pictures of, say, a hand held microphone: I want pictures of the actual device that you could mount on a circuit board.
Thanks!
There's not much to see in an electret mic element. It's all encapsulated. An electret microphone is a type of condenser microphone, which eliminates the need for a polarizing power supply by using a permanently-charged material. The first link below leads to pictures of the actual element. The second link below leads to pictures of dynamic mic elements. Dynamic microphones work via electromagnetic induction. They're basically small speakers used in reverse. They have a diaphragm that is the equivalent of a speaker cone. A small coil on the back of the diaphragm works against a magnet to produce the signal. This is the equivalent of the speaker coil. There doesn't appear to be much difference when viewed this way, but electret mic elements are small. Dynamic mic elements are generally bigger than electret mics.
