The phonograph: could it reproduce and also record?
Im researching on the history of recorded audio, and I have this question about Edison“s cylinder phonograph.
Lets go back to 1877 and try to answer these questions:
Was the phnograph able to playback audio after recording?
Im completely sure it couldnt playback WHILE recording, but could it play it back after it was recorded?
My question is, was the same device used for recording and playback? or did they record the sound on another device and the used the phonograph to listen to the recorded material?
Thank you!
No, a separate machine was used to record a master, and from that, copies were made for sale to play on the consumers machines, which could play only.
A consumer's machine that could record had to wait till the 1930s and the wire recorder.
