Why wont my brand new pool motor work right?

Its a 1 1/2 horse motor running from a 50' heavy duty 12 gauge extention cord. The motor is not getting hot (i can rest my hand on it) and there isnt air in the system. It will run for an hour or so and pump like a champ, then it quits. Its not throwing the breaker or anything, it just quits. Im confused, everthing seems to be in order.
Its brand new (first run 4 hours ago) the appropriate valves are open, its not getting hot or throwing breakers, and its primed and pumping wonderfully when it wants to. Im baffled. And the pool store that put it up isn't open today. Any Ideas?
Its not a car. Yohoo just posted my question in the wrong place. I clicked on home maintainance, but they screwed it up. Thanks anyway, Bob.
