8 ohm subwoofer/amp questions?
Before you start reading, this is not for a car
I have a hybrid pre-amplifier with two 8 ohm speakers plugged in.
It works fine.
But I also do have an 18 inch 8 ohm sub thats 500w RMS and 1000w peak.
My pre-amp has sub outputs, but I need to get a power amplifier to power my sub. I have been looking around online and I do not know what kind of power amp I need for my sub. I see all this bridge-mono stuff and I really don't know what it means. I really don't want to spend a fortune either.
Any suggestions or reccomendations?
Amps 101 very abbreviated versioin"
2 channel bridgeable amp rated at 500 watts max. that is 250 watts per channel (usually into a four ohm load). However, you can bridge that amp and get around 500 watts out of it for one channel. This allows you to double the power in to a mono speaker. This is good for subs as they need raw power. Bridging and amp is essentially tying the two channels into one and therefore doubling the power output of that one channel. However, if the amp is rated for a 4 ohm load and you hook up an 8 ohm sub then you just cut that power in half again.
Some amps are stable down to 1/2 ohm loads. Meaning you can hook up a 1/2 ohm load to the amp and still be safe.
There is a formula for all of this but the important thing to remember is that hooking speakers in series doubles the ohm load and hooking the in parallel halves the ohm load. 2 - 4 ohm subs hooked parallel equals a 2 ohm load. The lower the ohm (resistance) value the more current flow you allow which in turn boosts the power.
Now for the speaker
The ratings are 500 watts RMS and 1000 watts peak. What exactly does that mean?
Well the 500 watts is an average amount of injected wattage the speaker can handle over a given time and the 1000 watt number is the max amount the speaker can take before it blows.
Tell me exactly what you have in your car and I will find you an amp.
Is the sub a dual voice coil?
The cost issue is tough too because what may seem expensive to you may not be expensive to me.
You should give me an idea of how much you want to spend.
