House of the rising sun?
Yeah, I've heard it in multiple songs, like from the animals, johnny cash, and creedance clearwater, but what does it really mean? I doubt it would be a whore house or anything.

Strange that you've only heard it sung by men. It's a womans song and it is indeed about a whorehouse. Her husband is a drunk and she's going back to spend the rest of her short life there because it's all she has.
My guess is that the house was in the Eastern part of New Orleans, hence the name.
