Recording drum set help?
I want to start recording some of my own music soon, and i'm going to buy a set of 7 drum mics. But i'm not completely sure where to position each mic (i'm playing with a snare, kick drum, hi hat, ride cymbal, 2 crashes, 2 rack toms, and a floor toom). When i buy a mixer, does it need to have 7 different mic inputs for me to record this? And what other hardware would i need?
I already have all the software i need.
Yes, you need the inputs. Do these mics have clips or other hardware for mounting on a rim? You can use one mic between snare and hihat, just check on phones for proper position. Bass drum mic can go either in the bass drum or on a short stand in front of the drum.
I use only 4 mics for a set as I am your typical poor musician. A good EV bass drum mic inside the drum, an excellent shotgun condenser between snare and hihat and two good shotgun condensers overhead for cymbals and toms. With care and patience I get a good balance. Good luck!
