Do all unmarked police cars have external traits that help identify them?
Of the unmarked police cars i've seen in my life, all of them have external equipment that are easy to identify.
For example, my cousin's neighbor is a detective with the Arcadia (California) Police Department and he has a Crown Vic equipped with a rear LED light, a "Police Interceptor" badge near the trunk lid, and spotlights by the side mirrors.
Now, I often see unmarked police cars in movies. However those unmarked police cars are almost impossible to identify because it looks like a civilian car until it's chasing someone/heading somewhere important. Oftentimes these unmarked police cars have no radio or any visible emergency lights with the exception of a single rotating beacon that can be hidden or taken out at will. Detective Castlebeck's BMW from "Gone in 60 Seconds" is a perfect example. http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_1880-BMW-540i-E39-1997.html
So do unmarked police cars like that BMW above exist? Or is it just Hollywood?
Yes these types of cars do exist and no you really can't tell it form a regular civilian car. The British Police drive fancy unmarked cars that you can't tell until they turn on their Blues. If you watch ROAD WARS on Fox Reality you will see what I mean. Interestingly none of their Police cars Marked or Un Marked have spotlights which would be a dead give away. Check these websites and you might find some other cars similar to the one you posted.
