In the song Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin, why does Robert Plant say "Satan and Man"?
Are they really a satanic band then?
But personally, I think the alleged "Stairway to Heaven" back masking claims are false.
I don't think they're satanic either. But why does he say Satan and man? Believe me, they;re one of my favorite bands and I'd like to know why. Instead of telling me that they're not, why not tell me why they're not?
Yea true, but Satan was also once an Angel. Led Zeppelin often writes about mystical topics such as this.Maybe by music, they could mean inspiration from the occult? It's really interesting if you ask me.
The lyrics for that bit are; "Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call?
Oh... Satan and man. "
So you could say the singer is asking if the devil will pay attention to the music, if man will pay attention to the music.... that music is greater than either of the two, perhaps- that the music is divine?
The song also mentions Satan's daughter, and having an angel on his shoulder... I would see it as lyricism and poetry rather than scripture though. A feeling rather than an idea, an idea rather than an opinion. One reference to an angel doesn't make them a Christian band, one mention of Satan doesn't make them diabolists.
True... Lucifer was an angel... but the angel on the shoulder in this case seems more like the good angel that talks to us and helps us to decide good things. There should be a devil on the other one to tempt the singer to badness too, but this is not mentioned.
I tell you, once you start getting away from what the song actually says, you are in the land of see-what-you-want. It can mean anything and everything, whatever you want. The movie is a Roman gladiatorial match? You have it. The garden is the garden of Gethsemene? Alright! The houses of the holy are the houses of parliament in London... obviously...
