What's the difference between "line in" and "instrument" inputs on this interface?

There is one "Instrument" input on the front of this interface, on the bottom, and four "Line in"s. I just want to know the difference. I figure I could use the Line in for guitar amps, but what would I use on the Instrument input?
Looks to me like the instrument input is just a "front" connection for line 3. Note the line connecting the jack to the line 3 knob on the front. Most likely, this is so you can easily jack in with a guitar (or whatever), rather than having to reach around the back.
