Tell me about sampling and loops?
OK, I've seen several musicians use a laptop and software to take a sample of, say a certain chord progression or drum sequence, then loop it so that they can move onto another instrument. I've seen this with instrumentals and vocals, sometimes up to 4 or 5 separate vocal parts all going over and over...
So, as a multi-instrumental performer, I'd REALLY like to get into this kind of thing, as I feel like it can really enhance my solo performances. Can anyone tell me more about the software and computer I'd need, approximate cost, and possibly where I can look for good deals or to find more information?
Thanks so much!
For a live performance, Ableton Live would be your best bet for professional quality. You can record clips then loop them on the fly. Normally, I'd probably just use a radial keyboard split into multiple sections that play different instruments. However, in your case, I think it may be best to get a solid audio interface into your computer. Echo Audio, Digidesign, and M-Audio have pretty good selections. Depending on the number of inputs you have on the audio interface you choose, you will be able to record multiple vocals and instruments at once. You could also record them separately, then layer them in Ableton. There are really many setups you could have. It all depends what you're doing. Judging by what you've stated here, it sounds like Ableton, an audio interface, and a computer plus your instruments should be ok for you.
If you are a student you can get a discount for Ableton. Otherwise, it will run you about $600 USD. An audio interface's price varies usually by the number of channels it has. You should look under USB or FireWire audio interfaces if you want this setup to be portable. The M-Audio ProFire 2626 costs approximately $700 USD and has 26 ins and outs for all the instruments you might need to hook up. You'll want a good computer (laptop) as well to process your music. You don't want everything taking up 100% of your CPU or the sound will stall periodically, and that's never good for a live performance.
By the way, ZZSounds.com has an amazing selection of products if you're looking for them. They don't always have the best prices, but it's good for researching products.
