Can someone help with microphone trouble?
I just got a condenser microphone. I was planning on hooking it up to an amp, so I bought a phantom power supply. I didn't have 2 XLR cables to hook it up, but I did have one cable with an XLR on one end and a 1/4" jack on the other. I bought an adapter to make the 1/4" jack into an XLR. The mic won't work. I just get a loud humming. Do I need an XLR cable without the adapter?
Yep you do.
The three pins on the XLR carry the voltage to power via phantom power on two of the pins. You have used a two-pin 1/4" jack which will just carry the audio and not the extra pin required for the phantom power.
You need three connections to carry through the wiring, this can only be achieved when your 1/4" jack is 'TRS' (tip, ring sleeve) like a stereo jack so that it can carry three separate cores.
