How much are you willing to spend? Shure SM58's are pretty much a great standard for a performing microphones. I've seen ones which looked like a truck rolled over them and they still work. They will run you about $100 new though. AKG has some decent cheap mics.
You will need two things: something to amplify the signal coming through the mic line and some kind of speaker to play the sound through. Amps, as we know them, typically do both. Powered speakers typically work too. You can sometimes even get it to play out of your computer based on your set-up.
Cordless mics will probably run you more money than those that use cords. I don't recommend getting one as you do lose signal and there's a lot of trouble that comes with trying to use wireless set-ups. Wired mics are generally more reliable and straightforward. I wouldn't buy a wireless one until you get more familiar with what you really want.
