Singing repertoire suggestions?
I take vocal lessons. But I've recently been thinking of starting to hunt for repertoire on my own, if only to try them out when I'm free. I'm a light soprano and currently don't have a very strong high register yet (I haven't been taking lessons for very long). My comfort zone ends at G5 or Ab5 (top of the treble stave) - these are the last notes I can sing confidently without tensing up so far. Beyond that I don't always get them solid and clean, though I can go up to C6 (and still sound good) quite regularly when warming up.
My current lesson repertoire: Zhavoronok (Russian romance by Glinka), Un moto di gioja (Mozart), Agnus Dei (Coronation Mass - Mozart), Widmung (Schumann), Ah Non Credea (Bellini - w/o the final cadenza). Una Donna (Cosi Fan Tutti) feels very at home too, except for the high B at the end which I can't sing.
I'm going to ask my teacher about it soon, I'd just like to have some ideas going. I'm turning 18 this month, if that helps. Classical please
please go to your music library, and look up Lieder by the following composers: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss ( although the last two are for more advanced work)
Amongst the French composers, look for Gabriel Faure. His harmonies are not quite as demanding as his better known colleagues, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
for English art songs, please check out the Renaissance composer Henry Purcell, the 20th century folk-song arrangements by Benjamin Britten, and other folk-song arrangements by Aaron Copland.
If you look further in the music library, chances are you will run across a compendium by Van A. Christy, Expressive Singing, that used to be used for beginning songs ( mostly in English).
that should be enough to keep you ( even you) busy for a couple of years.....
