Can Dolby Pro Logic surround sound be transmitted via analog audio cables, specifically on the XBOX360?
I'm interested in obtaining surround sound for my 360 and wondering if the analog audio (red and white) cable will transmit the Dolby Pro Logic signal or will I need to find a Surround sound system that has inputs for other audio cable options?
Pro-logic is the only Dolby surround available on the analog audio outputs. It only produces a single channel surround usually fed to two speakers at the rear. As such, you will receive only a limited surround effect. Dolby Digital 5.1 is only available on digital audio outputs (optical, coax or HDMI), and includes separate left and right rear channels, a center channel and a subwoofer (LFE) channel. However, the source program must have Dolby Digital encoded in it. Some sources only have pro-logic, in which case the digital output will provide that. More advanced digital processors for Dolby will enhance the pro-logic output to give the effect of more channels.
