1999 Olds Intrigue..was told I need rack&pinion, 2 front wheel bearing, & power steering pump?
So, the noises that I have been hearing in my car for the last few months is something major..I kinda figured that. The mechanic who drove the car aksed if I was planning on keeping the car. Yes, I would like to. I mean I just paid it off in Dec. 06. Bought it used, now has 117,800 miles on it. I guess my question is..is it worth it. I wanted to keep my car atleast 3-5 more years, but it seems like every year I put in over $1000 into it. Got kids, so I want them to be safe. I do have AAA in case I break down. Can you give me some suggestions?? Do I really need to get all those things done?? Did I mention there is also problems with the muffler. Not really worried about that though. Help!! I really don't want to get into a monthly payment again for 3-5 years for a newer car, and I really can't afford to have it fixed right now. (Lost job in Dec., just started back to work last week, bills are piled up, etc) Honest opinions will be great. Any mechanics in the Cleveland area??
Hey maybe I can help out a bit. I work at a auto repair facility so I know a thing or two, if I were you I would get a few different places to check your car out because I find it hard to believe all of those things need replaced. The power steering pump can leak and still function, it may even make some noise when you turn the steering wheel , that's ok and for the rack and pinion it can leak also and still work, they might have told you that you need it because they don't feel like changing just the inner tie rod ends, it is much easier to change the whole thing, and fo the wheel bearings you can have very slight play in them and usually when they are bad you will hear a humming noise or vibration when driving. I do think it is worth fixing it because you have to remember a thousand dollars is better than a monthly payment and once you fix these problems you should be good for a while.
