Tirerack question?????
I just found out about tire rack and i love it for it's extensive research-able site esp indepth reviews .
BUT how does it work to have tires ship to home than take it to a tire place for mounting and what about road-hazards(how does that work).
Their prices are awesome but after factoring shipping and local tireshop mounting fees and roadhzards and local shops free lifetime balance.....well it's ALMOST the same price!
Ding! You just caught on.
I placed an order with Tire Rack yesterday for 1 tire. It cost me $18 to ship it ground. Tire Rack deals in huge volumes and I mean huge volumes so they basically sell the tires for just a few percent over wholesale, something the local mom-and-pop tire shop selling 150 tires a week can't do. But by the time you factor in shipping, and the fact that most shops tack on a surcharge to install tires you didn't buy from them the economics don't work out.
The reason I ordered from Tire Rack is the reason many people do - the particular tire I need is not easy to find, a Kuhmo competition tire in this case. It could take me weeks or months to get one of these locally, not the kind of stuff local tire stores, even Kuhmo dealers carry. And that really is what TR is best at, those unique and rare tires and tire sizes that you can't just find on the local street corner. And of course wheel and tire packages, which TR does better than anyplace I have found.
For the average driver with an average car who lives in a big city with lots of tire stores to chose from you can probably get what you want at as good or better a price locally. For someone with not a lot of local selection or that needs a very specific tire for a very specific application the Rack may be the only choice.
