how to stop a condenser mic from hissing when recording?
i just purchased the Samson Co1u condenser studio microphone but when i record, no matter what settings i alter, it hisses. i don't have a shock mount, is this the problem?
Unless you've got some sort of vibration coming up through the floor, a shock mount wouldn't cure it.
There are a couple of things that it could be.
Condenser mics can be incredibly sensitive, which is what makes them good for things like the human voice (I've got one mic that I can stand 3 feet from it, rub my fingers together, and hear it in my headphones). My first thought is that it's picking up some stray noise.
Since this is a USB mic, are you plugging it directly into the computer? You may be picking up the noise of the computer fan. The good news is that the mic is a hypercardioid, which means it's very directional. Try turning the microphone 90 degrees, and see if the sound changes. If it does, it's picking up a sound source like the fan on your computer, so you'd need to figure out some way of making it quieter.
If it doesn't change, then it may be something in the signal path that's causing the problem. Make sure the cord isn't running anyplace it could be picking up a stray signal (the cable is supposed to be shielded to prevent that, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.)
Also, see if there is a way in your software to boost the microphone gain. Sometimes with USB inputs, the level is a little low, and you end up having to boost the playback volume, and what you also end up doing is boosting any noise in the system.
