After Alexander the Great died, how much time elapsed before anyone documented his life?
Mainly I am trying to discover how everything was recorded about this man. I am also curious to know how much time elapsed after Jesus' death before the Gospels were written about Him.
There were several accounts of Alexander's life written soon after his life by eye-witnesses.
Alexabder actually employed a historian - Callisthenes - to accompany his expedition and act as his "PR man". Chares, Onesicritus, Nearchus and - most important - Ptolemy the Great (who established himself ruler of Egypt after Alexander's death) are all known to have written first-hand accounts.
Unfortunately, none of these works survive. The earliest we have are those written by Arrian, Diodorus Siculus, Quintus Curtius Rufus and Plutarch; written (with the benefit of the earlier works) up to 450 years later.
