My 9yr. old wants to design cars when he grows up. What educational track should he take?
I know it sounds ridiculously premature to be looking into this at his age, but he really wants to know what colleges he should be eyeing and what he should major in. He asks me this repeatedly. I personally think he should go to a highly ranked liberal arts institution where he can also minor or double-major in music, because he is musically gifted. What engineering majors and schools should he consider? Should he be reaching for a school like MIT, because he is so focused? Incidentally he know specs about every car make and model, as much as any adult enthusiast by studying Edmunds and car magazines. However, he is not as knowledgable about the mechanics and engineering of an automobile.
That's pretty funny - most parents are discouraging a music major/minor since there are so few jobs in that area. Automotive engineering is what he wants to look for if he's still interested 9 years from now. I know Clemson University has a great program.
Knowing makes and models is more like memorizing baseball cards - not really a marketable skill. If he's not as interested in the actual engineering of it, he's got plenty of time to figure that out.
