What is polarity for 1/4" speaker cable?
In a 1/4" speaker cable ( or "phone" plug ) which contact is typically positive & negative. I purchased pro audio speakers that come w/ 1/4" cables but my amplifier has binding posts. What I need to do is make an adaptor with a 1/4" jack to connect to the binding posts and am unsure of polarity and don't want to chance damaging speakers
The tip of the plug is positive +. You cannot do any harm to a speaker by reversing the polarity. It is only important that both speakers be wired the same. That way they will be in phase with each other. They sound a little better when they are in phase. That is the only purpose of the polarity marking.
