How do I get into the stage lighting business?
I want to have a career in stage lighting and special effects for musical shows, so I'm pretty much saying i want to do the light shows for concerts and raves like this one pretty much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNUeGAtw22E but i have little idea how to get into this kind of business or even how much it pays.
I'm nearing the end of high school and about to choose the subjects for my final years. Any help with what I have to do to get into this business, what I should be doing now in school, and what I should do when I leave is appreciated.
If your high school has a theatre department, ask about working on the lighting for their performances. That is the easiest way to start learning the basics about stage lighting. If your school doesn't put on stage productions, then look for a community theatre in your area and ask if you can volunteer. Theatrical lighting is different in design than concert lighting, but the equipment and basic techniques are the same, so it is a great place to start.
Some colleges have theatrical design & production degrees, which would include classes and training on use of stage lighting. Lighting isn't typically a college major, but it could be an area of concentration in a general design & production degree.
There are books about the technical aspects of stage lighting that you could get at the library.
I believe lighting engineers and technicians are part of a union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. They have a scholarship foundation, and would be a good source of additional information for you.
