What would be the best thing to do to get into stage lighting?
im in high school, choosing my courses in college im thinking of electrics and performing arts, but its all perfrorming arts and nothing whatsoever with lighting, i love lighting in the shows i do at school, until some wank biscuit IT technician takes over
but thats not important, what do i do? please help
My FIRST question is: ARE YOU AFRAID OF HEIGHTS?.. If your idea of fun is NOT walking across a 12 inch "I" bean 80 feet in the air to get to the rigging.. then you may want to consider another field of work.
You don't learn lighting from a school course.. you learn it by getting a job with a SOUND AND LIGHT contractor and you learn on the job. Keep in mind YOU WILL BE THE NEWBIE.,. and the NEWBIE gets all the HIGH WORK... they are the ones who climb up to the rigging and mount and aim the lights and speaker columns.. it's the NEWBIE who can hang for hours from their safety belt while they aim the lights and make other adjustments and it's the NEWBIE who takes their thermos, pizz bottle and a dry sandwich and climbs 80 to 100 FEET UP A ROPE LADDER to get to the FOLLOW SPOTS where they will have to stay for the next 2 or 3 hours, hanging from their safety belt.
You people all talk about lighting shows.. but HIGH SCHOOL is NOTHING like PROFESSIONAL LIGHTING. It is HARD WORK, it's DANGEROUS and, when the show ends and you are so tired you squeak.. you get to break down the rigging and pack it in the trailer before you get some sleep in a tiny bunk in the crew's bus where you will live like a RAT for days and months on end.
