Need help on speaker selection, and wiring to amp, please help!?
I just bought a Memphis PR4.50 amp, the specs on it are
4 ohms: 50 watts x 4 chan.
2 ohms: 70 watts x 4 chan.
Bridged, 4 ohms: 140 watts x 2 chan.
I am going to bridge two channels to one 10" sub, but the part I need help figuring out is how to wire the other two channels. Lets say I have 4 door speakers, and lets assume they are all the standard 4 ohms, and I want to run all 4 speakers off of the two channels left on the amp. (obviously I will lose fading capability this way but that's ok) What RMS rating should the 4 door speakers be? and how do I wire each set (2 right speakers in parallel or series, 2 left speakers in parallel or series)? Your help is GREATLY appreciated!!!
Well you would wire your rights in parallel and your lefts in parallel to get the 2 ohm rating, which is 70 watts per channel. So each speaker would get 35 watts per channel. Don't worry about the specs on speakers - just get the ones you think sound the best. If you are worried about volume, you can look for an efficient set of speakers by checking the SPL indicated by "db." For example, a 92db speaker will play considerably louder than an 89 or even 90db speaker. Otherwise, just listen. All but the cheapest of speakers will be able to handle the power.
Note: You will be running your amp at full capacity this way and it will get pretty hot - may even shut down periodically if you play it long. You might want to consider getting a separate sub amp in the future. Nothing to worry about, but don't be surprised if your amp shuts down from time to time from the heat.
