Studio Monitors or Headphones?
I have recently started to produce music. (EDM to be exact)
Many people have told me that if I want to get serious about producing I should buy a pair of monitors.
The thing is, I live at home and leaving for college in about a year. So I thought it would not be wise to get a pair of studio monitors, but instead buy a good pair of headphones for producing, allowing me to produce and record while everyone is asleep.
Should I continue with this idea?
For headphones I have looked at Stanton 3000's and Sennheiser 280's.
i don't recommend using headphones to make music. sound needs a chance to breath, and if the speaker is right by your eardrum than its not getting time to develop. studio monitors allow you to actually hear the music like someone would hear it sitting around listening to it on their stereo.
certain circumstances will make it so that studio monitors are out of the picture. if you can have them, it sucks, but you can still make music. be sure to get a good quality pair of studio headphones. the general consumer grade headphones sound like shit. the bass response in incredibly unrealistic. making music with poor phones like that and then actually putting the music on speakers will totally change the entire mix.
its your budget and your life, so the decision you make is yours. you could create the next legendary track with your headphones, or it could suck, who knows.
my recommendation as a mixing engineer would be to at least have a cheap pair of speakers around that you can easily hook up and check the sound every so often. and once you've used the headphones enough, and been able to compare them to other speakers, you will learn what it does to the mix. you may find that it hides some of the highs, so when you actually hear it on a speaker the highs are too high. once you learn what they do, you can start doing things to counteract the effect like turning down the highs, even though it may sound off in the headphones, it will sound correct on a real speaker.
good luck
