Yes you can!
I have been using two high quality studio monitors with my audio/video system for years and they sound great.

You would need to find a "passive" monitor to connect to a normal home audio system.
The big trend in studio monitors now is "powered monitors" that have the amplifier built in. These could be used with a home system too but they would not connect to a speaker output but they would connect to a "line" output.
