I have an aged mare, she has very loose bowels, she is being hand fed a good quality pellet. Plus hay.?
She is in a paddock with grass and is in good condition for a 30 year old not fat though. At the moment I am thinking of getting her put down if this problem doesn't stop. Is there anything i can give her to stop her diarrhea. I live in Australia.
Hoping someone can help.
You would be treating the symptoms without knowing the cause, and when the problem is diarrhea, that is not a smart thing to do. That is like putting a band-aid on a ruptured artery. You really should have her evaluated and maybe even scoped if you want to get at the cause of this. There are numerous possible causes. Some are infections, which are more likely to take hold in aged horses since their immune functions become compromised with advanced age. Parasite loads may also cause diarrhea. In an older horse, enteral tumors are more likely to have developed than they are in younger horses. Some causes are related to the diet, or to changes in the diet. I would not change her diet without having first had blood studies and vet exam performed to see if a cause can be determined.
To arbitrarily feed her anything suggested here without vet approval would be risky and could make her situation worse.
