Are vocal effects used live?
Hi. I'm in an acoustic band and I'm the vocalist. Sometimes I find that my vocals through a mic and into my macbook pro (in logic) clean with no effects, are in key and sound fine, but when things like reverb are added, sounds a lot better. I was wondering, do a lot of live musicians use things like reverb live? Because a lot of the time I think I can just about hear it. If so, what kind of equipment do I need, and how much do I need to spend to get a decent set up? Thanks.
Sorry, I forgot to mention this is for live performances, I want to know what I need
Yes...as a rule. Effects (mainly reverb and delays) are used on pretty much every live vocal performance you've probably ever heard.
If you're playing in clubs that have their own house system (most do), then you really don't need anything. It is standard practice of any soundman to add reverb to your live vocal. If you have to supply your own PA system for private party type gigs, then you will want to add your own reverb. Most PAs have onboard reverb, if yours doesn't, good outboard reverb units can be found for pretty cheap.
Example:
The Alesis midiverb has been many musician's favorite for years.
