Ribbon microphone question.?
I am thinking of picking up the Apex sp-3, it is a package of 3 mics (Apex 415, 185 and 205) the 415 is a wide diaphragm condenser mic, the 185 is a small pencil condenser, and finally the 205 is low end ribbon mic. Apex recommends not using phantom power with the ribbon mic, yet they sell you 2 more condenser mics that require phanthom power. I have a behringer eurorack 2004 mixer with 8 phantom power preamps. My understanding is that phantom power is only accesible through the XLR inputs. So would it be safe or proper to buy an XLR to 1/4" TRS cable to plug into the line input of the mixer. I am usually using 4 other condenser mics, and i plan on using this Ribbon mic a lot so i am not prepared to buy 4 apex phantom power units just so that i can use a ribbon mic.
in brief, my question is would it be safe or proper to buy an XLR to 1/4" TRS cable to plug into the line input of the mixer in order to bypass the phantom power only accessible in the XLR spots?
The line input would not have the phantom power thus would be safe with the Ribbon mic, EXCEPT that the mic output is probably around -60 DB while the line level input is probably looking for something like -10 or 0DB. That's as much as a 1 million times difference. Your question is confusing, since you state the ribbon mic does not require phantom power which is normal unlike condenser mics which always require phantom power. . To use a mic level microphone on a line level input would require and external preamp, NOT external power supply. I'm not that familiar with that particular Behringer product but all of the Behringer stuff I work with is only good down to about -20 db on the line level inputs.
