my horse is crazy when we go out hacking?
my horse is REALLY spooky out of hacks, he jumps about all over the joint, takes of, dips his shoulders, and spins around on the spot. im not really fased by it but it would be nice to have a calm relaxing hack for once, i dont haul of the reins of anything but whats the best way to deal with this behaviour? i take him out all the time with other horses and alone to get him use to it and its been over a year now, he is like 16 years old so he isnt just a young horse playing up. how to you stop a horse doing this? he is awsome in thr arena and he isnt a bad horse he is just genuinly scared of hacking out :L need help please
please don't crack your horse on the head with an egg. that's old school way of getting yourself hurt, also, doesn't work.
if the horse rears, or is showing spookiness in any way,...he's just not confident in himself and certainly not in you. so.....give him something else to think about.
if you go out, ride side by side with a seasoned horse, one who's solid, so that will help your horse. then, be sure that you're not holding the reins tight all the time, or grabbing him with your legs....stay loose in your body......and give him a job to do.....you and the calm horse's rider can take turns speeding up, slowing down, go around trees, bushes, stop, back up, etc...etc....
if you just sit in the saddle and offer no direction during the hack.....then your horse feels lost. some horses need stuff to do all the time (at least for the first several rides out) in order to feel like they're not alone......that you're in charge and giving him things to think about......
he's also got excess energy and nothing to do with it. a nervous horse is a horse with loads of energy but with nothing to do with that energy. put it to good use.
hacking for you should mean lots of transitions, lots of different lessons, exercises....not simply just sitting and following the horse in front.
if you're unable to ride side by side, then play leap frog with the other riders..... you ride past one, then the other person rides past you, and so on.....speeding up, slowing down, etc....
